Hazard explains how he gave up on MLS

Six months after announcing his retirement at the age of 32, Eden Hazard returned to the options available to him at the time. In an interview with Voo Sport World, the Belgian explains that he considered freelancing in MLS, before changing his mind.

After four unsuccessful seasons at Real Madrid, Eden Hazard retired last October at the age of 32. But the Belgian could, if he had wanted, continue his career for a few years. “Basically I said to myself, I’m going to America and play two or three years there,” he explained to Belgian channel Voo Sport World “MLS is not bad.”

“I jokingly told Christian Benteke that I was going to join him in Washington,” smiles Eden Hazard. “That way I play with my guy, I give him some passes and he scores goals.” Except the surgery didn’t take place. Neither in Washington nor elsewhere. “But it wasn’t just football, we had to move everyone,” explains the Belgian “That’s what slowed me down a bit.”

“No desire to come back to live in Belgium”

“To be honest I didn’t want to play football anymore,” adds Hazard “If I really wanted to continue I would have gone somewhere but I didn’t need to anymore I don’t want to travel just to make money and wonder why I did it two or three weeks later.”

Likewise, the former Lille and Chelsea player quickly dismissed the idea of freelancing in the Belgian Championship, where brothers Thorgan and Kylian play. There was in particular a question about the Union Saint-Gilloise. “But I didn’t go because we didn’t want to come back to live in Belgium,” Eden Hazard explains frankly. It was just time to retire.
