It will be no no giant screen installed at Place Bellecour in Lyon for the broadcast of the Coupe de France final on 25 May. OL meets PSG in Lille in a long-awaited match.

– We are in the process of seeing with the technical services whether the project can be successful, but it is quite complicated in terms of security in today’s context. We must see, in collaboration with the prefecture, what the security problems are and what costs this may entail”, declared the deputy mayor of Lyon in charge of Sports Julie Nublat-Faure at Progress this Friday 26 April 2024.

“It could be a very nice party,” she also slipped.

“Budget and security conditions not met”

However, according to our information, the city has decided not to install a fan zone in the main square of Lyon for this match. “The city of Lyon has studied the possibility of a screen, but the budget and security conditions have not been met,” says the town hall.

“The city of Lyon will continue to collaborate with the Olympics in the coming days, especially in partner bars that will offer free broadcasts and their broadcasting project in Décines,” explains the municipality.

The Olympics will broadcast the match at Groupama Stadium

On the same day, this Friday afternoon, Olympique Lyonnais confirmed that they have a giant fan zone at the Groupama Stadium for the Coupe de France final. The club will broadcast the match for free in the stadium with a giant screen.

This event will be free and open to all, upon presentation of a voucher previously reserved at the Ligue 1 club’s online ticket office.

Installing a fan zone in Bellecour, a real headache

The organization of fan zones becomes a headache in Lyon at every major sporting event, especially because of the costs associated with security. During the last FIFA World Cup in December in Qatar, the city said no to any event.

For the Rugby World Cup, where the matches took place in Lyon, it was LOU Rugby that organized fan zones at the Matmut Stadium and the Palais des Sports de Gerland by the municipality.

The last giant screen events in Lyon date back to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where France triumphed. A giant screen was installed for the final. This led to a last-minute change and tensions with the Olympics. For Euro 2016, a fan zone was also installed at Place Bellecour.
