What if vaping is bad for your heart? That’s what appears to be demonstrated by a prospective study, considered one of the largest and most comprehensive to date, examining the link between e-cigarette use and heart disease.

Vaping and Heart Health

Although vaping is often touted as a less harmful alternative to smoking, a growing body of research shows that vaping poses health risks.

A study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s annual scientific session in April 2024 demonstrates its effects on the heart.

A study of 175,667 participants found that vapers had a 19% higher risk of developing heart failure than those who had never used a device (be it an e-cigarette, vape pen, personal mods, etc.) .

The effect of electronic cigarettes on various types of heart failure

Analyzing the data by type of heart failure, the results show a larger increased risk with e-cigarette use in cases of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), where the heart muscle becomes tense and unable to fill with blood.

In contrast, no significant correlation was observed in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), where the heart muscle becomes weaker and unable to contract.

Recommendations for young vapers

Following these results, the scientists emphasize the importance of conducting more research to better understand the effects of vaping on heart health.

They are particularly concerned about the growing popularity of e-cigarettes among young people, which could have serious public health implications in the long term.

Last September, the EFP (European Federation of Periodontology) already warned about the dangers of e-cigarettes for oral health.
