Apple will still be in talks with OpenAI about integration with iOS 18.

Apple has reportedly resumed talks with OpenAI to integrate its artificial intelligence technologies into iOS 18, reports Mark Gurman at Bloomberg. Apple already held talks with the creator of ChatGPT at the beginning of the year, but the consultations were unsuccessful. With WWDC approaching, which will be held on June 10, it will now be about big money, and not about the technical side, which a priori would have been resolved long ago. Apple will still have the option to sign a Gemini license with Google and has not ruled out signing a deal with two suppliers.

Apple has developed a large language model that can run locally, and there are rumors that new AI features showcased at WWDC for iOS 18 and macOS 15 will be able to work offline on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple would also be working on generative AI functions, investing heavily in server farms dedicated to this activity, but the output would not yet be on par with competitors, which is why Apple would want to offer third-party solutions in anticipation of being able to run its own system.
