As the measles epidemic gains momentum in Europe, France’s public health authority warns of the need to step up vaccinations.

Public health France calls for vigilance in the face of resurgence measles in France and around the world. Despite relatively stable levels of vaccination adherence, recent data highlight gaps, particularly in relation to measles vaccination coverage.

There Vaccination coverage in FranceAs the French Public Health Service notes, although this figure is relatively high, it is not enough to curb the threat of measles. Although 83.7% of French people were in favor of vaccination in 2023, cases of infection measles in the same year were increased eightfold. This highly contagious disease has resumed after being interrupted during the Covid-19 pandemic. French public health warns that measles vaccination coverage remains insufficient and vaccination rates are below the 95% target needed to eliminate the disease.

In addition to measles, French Public Health data also reveals gaps in vaccination coverage against influenza and Covid-19. Among people aged 65 years and older, influenza vaccination coverage is declining, reaching only 54.0% for the 2023-2024 season. Additionally, Covid-19 vaccination remains insufficient, largely due to vaccine hesitancy.

Public health France therefore calls for catch-up vaccination, in particular for children, adolescents and young people born after 1980, and for people at risk of severe influenza and Covid-19.
