More than 9,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons

About 9,088 Palestinians are in Israeli prisons, an Israeli human rights group announced on Wednesday.

Those detained include 3,424 prisoners without trial or charge under the controversial administrative detention policy and 865 Palestinians classified as illegal combatants, the Center for the Defense of the Individual (HaMoked) said in a report, citing figures released by Israel’s prison service.

“Illegal combatant,” an unflattering category under international law, is defined in Israeli law as “someone who has directly or indirectly participated in hostile acts against Israel.”

The prisoners were placed behind bars in Israel after the Hamas attack last October.

HaMoked said this figure does not include Palestinians detained by the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip.

“Israel’s treatment of prisoners violates their rights to equality, dignity, family life, education and other rights, which is contrary to international law,” the human rights group said.

At least 34,568 Palestinians have been killed and at least 77,765 wounded in Israel’s brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip since the October 7 Hamas attack.

Israel imposed a strict siege on the Gaza Strip, leaving the specter of famine hanging over the population, especially the residents of northern Gaza.
