XDefiant, Ubisoft’s multiplayer first-person shooter, has been plagued by development delays due to over-ambition as well as a problematic work environment, but its release date has finally been announced!

The road to the release of XDefiant was not an easy one. The game has faced several obstacles and delays due to various reasons, from certification issues on consoles to inconclusive testing. For months, uncertainty has hovered over the launch date of the Ubisoft game, but after various twists and turns, the date has finally been announced! The game will be available from May 21st. PC, PS5 and Xbox Series developers who decided to focus on the latest platforms to optimize the gaming experience.

Complex development

According to sources inside Ubisoft, XDefiant has been subject to numerous internal delays since its announcement in 2021, confirming the words of well-informed insider Tom Henderson. These delays are largely due to the high expectations of managers who wanted to compete with games like Call of Duty despite mixed reception from players.. The developers, for their part, expressed disappointment at this pressure. Mark Rubin, executive producer of XDefiant, responded to X by saying that these delays are not related to the addition of new features. but also to the serious technical problems the team faced. The game’s release also became a joke within the community, as evidenced by fast from this fan:

Technical problems that have arisen since November 2023 have seriously affected the development process. However, the difficulties do not stop there: Insider Gaming noted the deplorable working conditions within the team. Managers and the “lead team”, which the developers call the “Boys Club”, are accused of maintaining a toxic environment characterized by periods of overwork and mass departures. Anonymous testimony denounces obnoxious behavior, a lack of professional ethics and a sense of superiority that leads to repeated abuses of power.

What is planned for launch?

XDefiant will ultimately launch with five playable factions, each representing iconic Ubisoft universes such as Far Cry, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, The Division and DeadSec from Watch Dogs. In addition to the factions, the game will offer 14 maps and five different game modes at launch.. During the first year, the game will receive four additional factions, 12 weapons and 12 additional maps.

A six-week pre-season will allow players to experience the content before the official launch. Subsequently, each season will bring its share of new features, with new factions, weapons and maps regularly introduced every three months. Following Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft aims to re-establish itself in the competitive first-person shooter game-as-a-service arena by offering players an ever-expanding and updated experience.
