ANC postpones Zuma’s disciplinary hearing over fear of violence

The African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s ruling party, announced on Saturday the postponement of a disciplinary hearing against former president Jacob Zuma, amid security fears and the risk of violence ahead of the May 29 general election.

Last Thursday, the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) announced that Zuma would be summoned to a disciplinary hearing next Tuesday for breaching party rules.

She explained that the former president was accused of breaching the ANC charter when he publicly endorsed the new party “uMkhonto we Sizwe” (MK) on 16 December 2023 and appeared on the MK party’s candidate list.

“Based on an assessment of the prevailing security situation at Luthuli House (the party headquarters in Johannesburg), we have been advised that activities, including disciplinary hearings, which attract large gatherings are not recommended as they risk leading to violence, especially on the run. – until the election”, it is stated in the party advisory.

He said that, as a result, ANC national leaders had decided that such activities should be postponed until after the national and provincial elections, including Mr Zuma’s hearing.

In December 2023, Zuma launched his own party named after the former military wing of the African National Congress, urging South Africans not to vote for the ANC in the next general election.

Following this development, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ANC decided to suspend the former president’s membership and subject him to disciplinary proceedings.

More than 27 million registered voters were invited to the polls to elect 400 members of the National Assembly, who, in turn, will elect the next president.
