UNESCO’s selection of the city of Tangier to host the International Jazz Day (Jazz Day) celebrations from April 27 to 30 reflects Morocco’s ability to successfully organize major international events. This celebration was held, under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, at the Palace of Arts and Culture in Tangier, the building on which His Majesty began construction work, and which will occupy an important cultural position in the future.

In a statement to the press, on the sidelines of the ceremony organized at the Palace of Arts and Culture to celebrate International Jazz Day, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Ben Saedane, confirmed that “choosing Tangier and the Kingdom of Morocco to host this global event indicates the high quality of organization provided by the Kingdom, through Hosting many international cultural and sporting meetings and activities, most notably the African Football Cup of Nations (2025) and the World Cup (2030), in addition to many other tournaments. International events. We are proud that UNESCO has chosen the city of Tangier to host the World Jazz Day celebrations, because it is the first time that an African city or country has hosted this global event. This event affects more than two billion people around the world, which reflects the importance of this choice.

Mr. Ben Said pointed out that this choice is linked to Tangier’s long history with jazz music, recalling that the city has witnessed jazz legends searching for inspiration and renewal throughout its history.

This lavish evening was enhanced by the presence of His Majesty the King’s Advisor and Founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, Mr. André Azoulay, the Minister of National Education, Nursery and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa, and the Governor of the Tangier-Tetouan region. Al Hoceima region, Younes Tazi, the head of the regional council, Omar Moro, the head of the Herbie Hancock Jazz Institute, Tom Carter, and a group of officials and personalities from the worlds of culture and arts, both Moroccan and foreign.

The “Jazz Day” celebrations, organized by UNESCO and the Herbie Hancock Jazz Institute, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Communication, and in partnership with the Municipality of Tangier, highlighted Tangier’s jazz heritage, as well as the cultural and artistic ties that unite Morocco, Europe and Africa.
