EPCR’s contract with TNT, current broadcaster of the Champions Cup in the UK, was not renewed due to lack of agreement. This is why now is the time for concern over the channel.
Will the Champions Cup disappear from the British audiovisual landscape? This is the question we are asking ourselves these days across the channel. In fact, the body responsible for organizing the competition and the Challenge Cup, EPCR (European Professional Club Rugby), has not reached an agreement with the current broadcasters, TNT Sports, reports The times. Unfortunately, the leaders of the EPCR have very few other viable options, to the point that several players express a fear: that “European” rugby will be abandoned.
Currently, TNT (formerly BT Sport) is the official broadcaster of the Premier League and the next autumn tour, following the end of the Amazon Prime era. In addition, it is on the air that we find the Champions Cup final between Leinster and Toulouse on 25 May. But that’s when the contract expires. The TV channel says they are in favor of passing on these rights to the Champions Cup, but not for an overpriced price. Other broadcasters exist such as Viaplay, holder of the rights to the URC, but the budget does not appear to be at the same level, or as Sky Sports, which has decided to scale back rugby union coverage and focus only on summer tours and those of the British and Irish Lions.
