The electrification of vehicles is gaining ground in Morocco

The Moroccan automotive market is experiencing a revolution with the gradual implementation of the vehicle electrification paradigm. Hybrid, fully hybrid and electric models, carried by renowned international brands such as Audi, Mercedes, BYD, Kia, Porsche, Toyota and Hyundai, have conquered the market in successive waves, marking an important ecological transition.

In 2023, electric vehicle sales increased by 25.28%, reaching 7,165 units, all categories combined. According to the Association of Vehicle Importers in Morocco (AIVAM), this growth is remarkable compared to the previous year, although these sales represent only 4.5% of the total market, which amounted to 161,504 units. By comparison, in Europe electric and hybrid vehicles represent 40% of sales.

For the year 2024, more than 463 units of electrified vehicles were sold nationwide, with Dacia (146 units), Citroën (84 units) and BYD (38 units) being the biggest sellers. Premium brands are not left out: Audi has introduced its fully electric models Q8 e-tron and Q8 e-tron Sportback, Mercedes has launched a complete range of six electric vehicles and Kia has presented its EV6.

Interest in plug-in hybrids, especially among luxury brand customers, is increasing, with 561 units sold in 2023, compared to 380 in 2021.

Porsche, Land Rover and Mercedes Benz dominate this segment. Fully hybrid cars are also generating notable enthusiasm, with Toyota, Hyundai and Renault being the market leaders with 3,470, 1,318 and 367 units sold respectively, for a total of 6,141 units in 2023.

The automotive market now includes 24 brands and 82 models of new energy vehicles (NEVs), up from 18 brands and 71 models in 2022. The growth of hybrids has led to an increase in sales of gasoline vehicles, as well as dynamics confirmed for vehicles with alternative engines , with an increase of 17% and a market share of 3.5%.

With an increasingly rich and competitive offering, the national market is recording an increase in vehicles with electrified engines. In 2022, 18 brands and 71 models were launched on the market, compared to 16 brands and 57 models in 2021. The new roadmap foresees the installation of 600 to 2,500 electrical terminals on the national territory, marking the way to greater electrification of vehicles.
