Bundesliga. Ralf Rangnick confirms talks with Bayern Munich to replace Tuchel

Current Austria coach Ralf Rangnick confirmed on Wednesday (24 April) that he was in discussions with Bayern Munich to replace Thomas Tuchel as coach of the German club this summer. The former Manchester United manager told the Austrian media 90 minutes that“there had been contact” with Bayern, without however indicating whether he would be the future holder of the position.

“I feel very good” about Austria

“Fully focused on the euro” in Germany (14 June – 14 July), which he will play with Austria, Rangnick did not want to say whether he would take over the reins in Munich. “I also informed the Austrian Federation” about these contacts, he continued. We have a real relationship of trust.” Bayern are looking for a new coach after telling Tuchel in February that they did not count on him for next season.

German press reported Bayern’s interest in Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, only German champion, and German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, but both pulled the curtain on the Rekordmeister by deciding to stay in office. “I Feel Really Good” with Austria, he continued, “at the moment there is no cause for concern (from the Munich interest) intensive and specific.

“If Bayern said to me ‘we want you’, I would have to ask myself if that’s really what I want,” he avoided. The 65-year-old coach will have a lot to do at the European Championship to get out of a tough group against France, the Netherlands and Poland. Nicknamed the “godfather of gegenpressing”, or counter-pressing, Rangnick has had a lot of influence on German football and its coaches in recent years.

Before his seven-month stay in Manchester (2021-2022), he coached a number of German clubs, including Hannover, Schalke, Hoffenheim, Leipzig. At the end of the last century, he brought Ulm into the Bundesliga for the first time. Leverkusen stopped a run of eleven consecutive titles for Bayern, but remained in contention in the Champions League, meeting Real Madrid in the semi-finals.
