Cycling: Chrono 47 and Albret, a love story that never fades

When he launched the presentation of the 6th edition of the Chrono 47 in Albret, Alain Lorenzelli gave a small smile. “It’s becoming a little institution in our territory.” Every year, without much hesitation, Guidon Agenais, the organizing club of this high-level cycling race, turns to the southern part of the department to find the route and the environment favorable to hold this team time trial. Because in addition to finding the ideal playing field to be labeled Coupe de France N1 by the association (neither too flat nor too steep), he is welcomed there with open arms.

One euro invested generates 3.65 in economic benefits

It must be said that – cyclists, guides and companions combined – almost 1,000 people come outside Lot-et-Garonne for at least one weekend. So obviously, in Albret, we open our arms wide to this tourist bonanza that feeds the wings of the season, like the Albret Jazz Festival in September. “A thousand people coming to discover our territory, it clearly strengthens our brand image,” appreciates the president of Albret Community, an important partner of Chrono 47. One euro spent by the community in this partnership generates 3.65 euros in economic benefits for the region’s tourism operators (accommodation, catering, shops, etc.). The villages take ownership of the race

Between Albret and this cycling race, it is not just a marriage of convenience. Little by little the villages, the hosts or those passing through, take ownership of the race through the various activities they offer. Last year, Sos set the bar high. In 2024, Francesca’s and her dynamic initiative federation intend to do just as well! “Small but strong villages, which were not afraid to invest to have a competitive race,” congratulates Alain Lorenzelli. In addition, Chrono 47 is the only cycling race in France where the prize money is equal between men and women.

The popular enthusiasm for the Chrono 47 in Albret can also be measured by the number of volunteers involved: 250 (including 120 marshals) in a pool of 26,000 inhabitants. “We help energize the region by highlighting the cities traversed by the general public,” says Cathy Gastou, head of the Chrono 47 organizing committee. Also this year, three misses from Calignac and Francescas will present the bouquets to the winners. And for every registered runner, one euro will be donated to the Lot-et-Garonne Cancer Committee.

Will a future crack reveal itself in Albret?

With a budget of 40,000 euros, the Chrono 47 is still light years away from the Tour de France. And he doesn’t pretend to. But he has other weapons, other ambitions. Like bringing out tomorrow’s champions, like Kevin Vauquelin, seen three years ago, and recently second in Flèche Wallonne.

This love story did not leave Jean-René Bernaudeau, sponsor of this 6th edition and head of Total Direct Energie’s professional team, indifferent. “Amateur cycling needs a boost. These tests are necessary. I come for the race, what it represents and to talk to those who ride. Our sport should be pyramidal.
