Panathinaikos equalized against Maccabi in the Euroleague quarter-finals

Like Monaco (against Fenerbahçe), like Barcelona (against Olympiakos), Panathinaikos fell in the first game of the series, at home, forcing an immediate reaction this Thursday against Maccabi Tel Aviv. It took place and this time Maccabi, like Tuesday, was unable to make up for a twelve-point deficit in the third quarter.

On the contrary, it was the Greeks who had to rally to overcome an 8-point deficit at the end of the first quarter (with 10 points from Jake Cohen). Fullback Kostas Sloukas made the upset by scoring three three-point baskets in the second quarter, won 31-11 by Pana (51-39 at halftime). Maccabi stopped the bleeding in the third quarter, buoyed by Lorenzo Brown’s points, before threatening again by pulling back to 71-68 thanks to an 8-0 run at the start of the final period.

The ghost of Game 1 didn’t last forever because Sloukas (29 total points) and Mathias Lessort (11 points, 8 rebounds) came back strong, enough this time to win this Game 2. Game 3 takes place next Tuesday, in Tel Aviv. The series is played on a best-of-five basis.
