When will the price of gas bottles increase?

Mustapha Baitas, government spokesman, said on Thursday that no increase is currently planned. This statement is in response to the concerns of Moroccans, especially the most vulnerable, about the impact of such a measure on their purchasing power.

The parliamentary opposition is alarmed by the consequences of such an increase. MEPs fear that this measure will weigh heavily on the budgets of Moroccan families, especially those already receiving direct social assistance. To counter this risk, some propose giving every household two free gas bottles.

The issue of the price of butane gas has been a source of tension for several months. Last October, the government announced a gradual increase in the price from 40 to 50 dirhams by 2026, at a rate of 10 dirhams per year. This decision, if it has not yet been implemented, raises questions and fears among the population.

The government is aware of the social and economic issues raised by this issue and pledges to communicate with citizens in full transparency. Mustapha Baitas assured that Moroccans will be informed in a timely manner of any decision on butane gas prices.

It remains to be seen whether this measure, although postponed, will actually be implemented and in what form. The government knows it will have to balance the need to rationalize subsidies with protecting the purchasing power of households, especially the most vulnerable.
