WHO and France hold high-level meeting on meningitis (Paris)

Building on recent progress in the fight against meningitis, including the introduction of a new, highly safe and effective vaccine in Nigeria that will help end large-scale meningitis outbreaks, world leaders are meeting at the Pasteur Institute on April 26, 2024 in Paris to discuss implementation of the global plan. roadmap to defeat meningitis by 2030.

The event, led by the French government and the World Health Organization (WHO), and with partners including the Pasteur Institute, Gavi, UNICEF and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, builds on the first-ever World Health Assembly resolution on meningitis. at the initiative of France.

This innovative plan takes a comprehensive look at not only how to identify, control and defeat meningitis in all regions of the world, but also how to rehabilitate those already suffering from this deadly disease.

After a century of devastating epidemics, making history in Africa’s meningitis belt is now a dream that could become a reality.

Meningitis is a fatal and debilitating disease; it strikes quickly, causes serious health, economic and social consequences and affects people of all ages in all regions of the world. The End Meningitis 2030 Roadmap is an innovative, multi-stakeholder approach that enables the public and private sectors to work together to defeat meningitis.

If fully funded and implemented, the roadmap could prevent at least 900,000 deaths and 2.7 million infections from vaccine-preventable meningitis by 2030. It also means savings of $4 billion to $10 billion in medical costs for affected communities and the health care sector, on top of billions more. in indirect costs.
